Magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation of light by exchange-coupled magnetic layers

چکیده
A longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation (MSHG) of light (at 2v) have been measured in a SiO2/Fe96Si4/Dy30Fe58Co12/glass exchange-coupled magnetic bilayer system with competitive anisotropies. Theoretical MSHG predictions in this structure that give rise to an effect proportional to magnetization components and that are allowed by an electric dipole mechanism are reported and discussed. The magnitude of the MSHG effect depends on the electric field of the incoming radiation at each interface and on the corresponding incoming (at v) and outgoing (at 2v) Fresnel coefficients. It is demonstrated that transverse pp MSHG selectively probes the magnetization of the first SiO2/Fe96Si4 interface, while transverse sp and longitudinal ps MSHG is sensitive, but less selectively, to the Fe96Si4/Dy30Fe58Co12 interface that supports a planar magnetic domain wall. (p and s are the usual parallel and perpendicular polarizations to the plane of incidence.) The contribution to MSHG by gradient magnetization terms is negligible. © 2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 160.3820, 160.4330, 190.4350, 230.4110.

Second Harmonic Generation Diagnostic of Layer by Layer Deposition from Disperse Red 1–Functionalized Maleic Anhydride Copolymer
Layer-by-layer (LBL) electrostatic assembly of poly-electrolytes is proving to be an increasingly rich and versatile technique for the formation of multilayered thin films with a wide range of electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. In the present work we synthesized a new nonlinear optical (NLO) maleic acid copolymer containing Disperse Red 1 moieties, built-up multilayer assemblies by a...

In this study, nine Nd-Fe-B and FeCe thin films with 10-50 nanometers width were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering on the Si/SiO2 substrate. Then, the films were annealed at 800 oC for 5 sec in rapid thermal annealing furnace. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) was used to analyze the phase composition of layers and existance of Nd2F14 and Fe65Co35 phase was confirmed, without formation of any o...
متن کاملInfluence of lattice mismatch on magnetization-induced optical second harmonic generation from a magnetic film on a nonmagnetic substrate
The optical second harmonic generation from a thin magnetic film on a nonmagnetic substrate is theoretically investigated for both sand p-polarized incident light. The contributions of lattice misfit strain as well as of misfit dislocation strain to the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility are described using a nonlinear photoelastic tensor, together with the contribution of magnetizat...
متن کاملCoherent optical phonons and parametrically coupled magnons induced by femtosecond laser excitation of the Gd(0001) surface.
Coherent spin dynamics in the THz domain coupled to a coherent phonon is observed in the time-resolved second harmonic response of the Gd(0001) ferromagnetic metal surface. An LO phonon of 2.9 THz is excited by a transient charge displacement at the surface caused by resonant absorption of a fs laser pulse in the exchange-split surface state. This lattice vibration modulates the interlayer dist...

This thesis presents optical characterizations of interfaces in ferromagnetic heterostructures and thin films used for spin polarized electronic devices. In these experiments, femtosecond laser spectroscopies are exploited to investigate the interface magnetization reversal, spin precession, and band offset, which are crucial in determining the performances of spintronic devices. First, magneti...
